#BigQs with INNOCENT NJUGUNA

 Who is Innocent?
Innocent is a cool easy going guy.

Of all the paying careers, why acting?
Acting gives me a sense of belonging

How long have you been acting?
I started...quit and went to school, worked in different fields and went back to my   first love.... let’s say one year and a half years.

Have you managed to live a comfortable life with your skill? In other words, is acting paying?
Well, it is not as paying as it should be since I have to work two or three jobs which is not easy, but, things are not so bad. Things can only get better!

You have a great body, has it always contributed in getting you roles?
(Laughs) I sure do hope it does. I have loved working out ever since I was young and admired all those guys on t v or in my hood who were fit.....I think it does contribute in a way

Why do you always land the 'bad boy' role?
Does it mean your personality is quite similar? (Laughs) No, I am just the opposite. I don't think am a bad person but I don't mind it at all, I like those roles.

What do you really look for in a woman?
I like them small, a good heart, love me for me, hold a conversation, speaks her mind, take care of me like a baby…(Laughs)

What is that role you can never play?
I am an actor...I try to be as versatile as I can, just like Johnny Depp.

What do you think is wrong with our film industry?
We need a body... a structure and then everything else will fall in place

You are also a model, spotted on the 'HBOX' billboard, has it boosted you career in anyway? HBOX is a new commodity in town...So, I guess it will all depend with how well it hits the market

In your own words, compare the Film industry in Kenya and Nigeria...
Nigeria is on a different level. Most of their content is not up to standard but they have the support of their government and their own people...the good thing is Kenyans are now starting to embrace their own, so I should say that we are headed there.

Who is your best actor in Kenya?
Raymond Wafula. He does roles that I will be doing when am his age, which is awesome.

Do you think Kenyan TV stations are doing enough to support local content?
Ten years ago, we had close to zero percent content, right now we are close to forty percent. We are not there but am hoping with time things will get better. A lot of media houses have shown a lot of interest in the Kenyan content.

Do you support the gay community in Kenya?
I believe everyone has a reason for what they do. I do not need to approve or disapprove, it's your life, do what you want.

Who is your best Kenyan director?
I have worked with a few. they have different styles and all of them are really great...Allan of JANE AND ABEL, Alfi of MABESTE, Gatero of JULIET and Eric of MAMA DUKA a young director and very creative.

Parting shot…
You can never go wrong with passion

#BigQs WITH RIXPOET

Tell us who is Rixpoet.
Rixpoet is a cool, calm and collected poet with a passion for
words, love and peace.

How was your childhood?
It had many things in it. I'm the first born in a family
of three children. I've grown up really closed and writing has been my
therapy since then. I was suicidal at the age of 16 because of
problems I faced at home. It's been a long journey. Somehow, I'm still
alive.

When did you discover your talent?
At 16 years, during that hard time. Had
been expelled from school and it was virtually impossible to study
from home, especially the subjects that were a challenge to me like
Mathematics, Physics and Biology. I was lonely. Remembering my late
sister who had died in my watch at five months old, I imagined that
she would have been around to give me a shoulder to lean on had she
been alive. That inspired me to pen down my first ever poem titled 'A
Letter To The Grave', in which I expressed my feelings to my late
sister. The rest is history.

What is your style in poetry?
I'd like to describe my poetry as one that speaks to the soul;
thought provoking. I am in love with the idea of expressing myself in
the simplest of words yet creating diverse and vast meanings and
images in people's minds and hearts.

If you were not a poet, what would you be doing?
I'd be a news editor in some media house or a footballer in the
Tusker Kenyan Premier League. But I still want to play football. :)

Do people love what you do?
The people who read or have listened to my work are in a better
position to answer that. I however get humbled by the amazing feedback
I get from my fans and critics.

What inspires you?
My life is my first inspiration. I've been through things which
have helped shape my art because of the way I understand life and view
the world. It gives me a cutting edge to bring out things not everyone
can imagine anyone would write about and the whole idea helps me
create new experiences in people. My inspiration also comes from the
smallest things to the biggest; could be a conversation I overheard in
a matatu or the body language of the people I meet in the streets. It
could be the weather or how I feel about a particular food. It could
be anything.

Where do you see yourself in three years time?
I run a weekly arts forum called Fatuma's Voice and I meet lots of
young poets who need so much guidance and mentor-ship. In three years
I'd want to have taken the Kenyan poetry scene to international status
by doing quality videos and mentor-ship classes for upcoming poets and
other artists. (www.fatumasvoice.org)

Do you beleive you are the best poet?
Well, in art, one cannot call or term himself as the best like they
do in hiphop. As a poet, I work on the quality of my work so that I
could give people experiences and also learn and work with others so
that I could be able to better myself. I am living my art to the
fullest though, and is in the process of beginning my poetry band.

At what rate is poetry growing in Kenya?
Poetry in Kenya is growing at a very fast rate. What we need is
the corporate world to invest in it, but mostly, Kenyan established
and upcoming poets to be more passionate so as to achieve
international standards so that it could be easy to break out to
outside markets, rather than only concentrating to have a niche in the
towns which the art is flourishing. There is a lot of work to be done.

What would you advice anyone who wants to venture into poetry?
I wouldn't advise anyone to be a poet. It's an inborn thing. It's
not like a career that people go to specialize for in school. It's a
talent, and not everyone has it because we are different. Those who
think they do, therefore, should do it for the passion first and more
so work to make an impact to people's lives than just getting paid for
their work or being known out there. A poet is a very powerful person
in the society. He has words, one of the greatest and most appropriate
modes of communication. He needs to use this power to make the world a
better place apart from offering entertainment. And most of all, he
needs to live his art.

What is your taste in women?
Hehe. Interesting question. I am attracted to mature women. People
I could hold heavy and constructive conversations with yet also joke
about the most stupid things under the sun and be able to get along.

Who is your favourite Kenyan actor?
I do not have a favourite Kenyan actor. I admire quite a number
though; from Charles Bukeko, Nick Ndeda, Gerald Langiri, Oliver
Litondo, to the hilarious Olwenya Maina.

Who is your favourite Kenyan actress?
Well, I shall include Brenda Wairimu, Mkamzee Mwatela, and Nini
Wacera in that list, among others.

Favourite food?
Ugali anytime :) I admit I love mchele though.

Final say;
Words are living things.

#BigQs with Lizz Njagah

Where did you grow up?
Born and bred in Nairobi eating Ugali and Fish and loving every minute of it

What inspired you into acting?
I've always been an entertainer, when I was growing up I was always the one telling stories, doing funny stuff. I was an expert in getting my younger sister to stop crying and this was when I was 4 years old..

Can you sing?
Yes, In the shower

Did your family have problems with you being in the entertainment industry?
What family doesn't? my mother was concerned about me because all parents want what's best for their kids and at the time i started, there was no future in acting. But she never forbade me to stop. She supported me that way, by not saying no. When she watched season 1 of Makutano Junction she became my biggest fan, to date. My siblings have always been very encouraging, attending my shows, giving me honest feedback. They saw me grow

You have a greater experience in the acting field, do you think it is growing with the right pace?
I have seen how far we have come, from days of only Play of the Week on KBC to Kenyan TV shows dominating prime time on Africa Magic Entertainment.. From when no one wanted their kids to be actors, to parents asking me to hook up their kids with acting gigs.. But it still isn't growing fast enough. We've been in the toddler stage for fifty years..

Who is your celebrity crush?
I am totally crushing on my husband, I bite myself sometimes and wonder how I got so lucky 😉

Do you think your marriage with Alex is at risk since you are both in showbiz?
No, our marriage is built on trust. We protect our marriage.. We will deal with everything as it comes as long as we are together. Cheesy but true

What do you do offset?
Eat. Sleep. Repeat

Your worst role?
I've loved every role I have been given, even if I didn't like the character because to play someone, hating the character makes it so much harder to be them so I have learned to love all the characters I play..

What don't you like about Kenyan film directors?
That they are so few.. We need many more

Your character in House of lungula was quite steamy, does it haunt you?
Sometimes, I believe that certain characters stay with me, because I call on different parts of myself to play different characters.. And sometimes the parts stay a bit longer than they are supposed to. Its harder to get out of character than to get into character

What kind of roles do you love acting?
I've just discovered how fun playing evil is.. 😉 Being the anti-hero is so deliciously fun

Who is your favourite Kenya actor?
I just love Raymond Ofula.. He kills it everytime..

Who is your favorite Kenyan actress?
I have many favorites but seeing as you asked me to mention one.. Nini Wacera, I have a great admiration for her as an actress

What is your source of inspiration?
My birth mom passed on when I was quite young. She was a believer in achieving one's full potential.. Her life inspires me every day.

If you were not acting, what would you be doing?
Singing

Lately, you have been going for shoots in Nigeria and you seem to be doing a great job. Does that mean you prefer the Western film industry?
Its obviously more established but my words where I said I was moving to Nigeria were taken out of contest they were said in jest. I will stay in Nairobi even if to make a better industry for my kids should they choose to go into Film..

A piece of advice to all those actresses who look up to you.
Acting pays, if you stay the course and don't give up too easily you will see the fruits. Make it about the work, don't get lost in the fame. Its a job like every other job. Only in the public eye. It requires discipline, determination, skill, keep working on yourself and someone will take notice

Final say...
Above all, have fun.. Do what you love and you never have to work a day in your life
